Lightning set for big home-opening weekend
Defending IBL champs will play Sunday live on FOX


The Los Angeles Lightning will open its home campaign this weekend with lots of hoopla, including its first-ever TV game on Sunday. The defending International Basketball League champions will play to host to the Oregon Waves in a rematch of last year's IBL Finals, which the Lightning won two games to one.

The teams will square off on Saturday at Cal Lutheran's Gilbert Arena in Thousand Oaks with the tip set for 7:15 p.m.

On Sunday, they'll drive up the coast to Santa Barbara City College for a live TV game on FOX 11 in the Sports Pavilion at 3 p.m. The game, presented by Perry Ford of Santa Barbara, will be telecast on the Central Coast by KKFX/FOX 11.

"This is a great opportunity to showcase our talent and expand our product," said Lightning owner Mark Harwell. "It's a rare treat for fans to get a chance to meet NBA and international players."

Both games will be on radio with Home Field Sports handling the broadcasts at 1400 AM KKZZ. Eric Evelhoch will do the play-by-play with Rob Lemons providing the color. You can also listen to a live streaming broadcast by going to the team's web site, www.lalightning.net.

The Lightning, 18-5 a year ago, have won eight of their last nine home games. They're off to a a 2-0 start after a pair of wins last weekend over the Nevada Pride in Las Vegas. Phil Givens scored 25 points in a 143-97 season-opening rout. On Saturday, Trayvon Lathan (32 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists) and 6-11 Chris Ayer (29 points, 8 rebounds) both set career scoring highs and combined to hit 25-of-32 field goals in a 140-125 triumph.
